Annual herbaceous plant 40-60 cm tall, with a slender, branched stem. The leaves are divided into numerous practically thread-like elements. The flowers begin to appear in June and continue to bloom until September, gathered in terminal groups at the ends of the stems. The flower which has the characteristic spur is ink blue in colour; more rarely white or pink specimens are found. The fruit is similar to a small bean pod, light brown in color; it opens along its entire length and contains small, black, triangular seeds. Flowering: June - August, sometimes blooms again in October.

An undemanding species, it adapts to all types of soil, as long as it is free from stagnation and in a sunny position. It is frequent on the edges of paths and abounds on uncultivated land with calcareous soil.
