Genus of over 400 species of climbers with mostly evergreen tendrils and some annual, perennial, shrubby or arboreal. They live in woods, on rocks or in prairies in tropical America and Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Passiflora ligularis is a fast-growing perennial climber with long, flexible stems. The heart-shaped leaves are shiny and dark green. During the summer season until early autumn, it produces numerous flowers, characteristic of this species which are fragrant and with purple filaments. The edible fruits are spherical and with orange skin. The pulp, containing numerous small seeds, is gelatinous, translucent and has a sweet and slightly acidic flavour.

    Pedoclimatic needs

Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil, in sun or partial shade, protected from cold winds. This species is native to the Andes and grows at an average altitude between 1500-2500 meters above sea level. These areas are characterized by cool and humid climates with temperatures between 15°-25°. This species is not rustic and in winter it resists up to +3°/+5°c. It can be grown in the ground in gardens with temperate climates where temperatures do not fall below freezing. It does not tolerate the torrid and dry Mediterranean summers where it must be planted in positions more sheltered from the heat and must be watered regularly.
