Genus of approximately 600 species of monoecious, semi-deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs, widely distributed in woods and scrublands of the Northern Hemisphere and widespread in the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. Quercus canariensis, or Algerian oak, is a deciduous or semi-evergreen tree with an erect habit up to 12-15 m tall. The leaves are shiny, elliptical or lanceolate, intense green, with a serrated edge and from 5 cm to 15 cm long. The acorns are dark brown with a light gray dome, thick, tuberculate and enveloping. Use Ideal for creating groves or as an isolated tree.

    Pedoclimatic needs

This species prefers sandy, deep, fertile soil without stagnation. It should be planted in full sun, but also adapts to partial shade. The Algerian oak prefers fresh and humid climates, not too cold; It resists short frosts down to -6°/-8°C.

    Sowing

From autumn to early winter. The seeds are recalcitrant: they cannot be stored for long and quickly lose germination. They should be sown immediately after receiving them.
