Genus of about 600 species of monoecious, semi-deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs, widely distributed in woodlands and scrublands of the Northern Hemisphere. Quercus myrsinifolia is a compact, evergreen shrub or small tree with smooth gray bark, which cracks in mature specimens. Glossy, lanceolate leaves with serrated edges, dark green, up to 12 cm long. In spring the new growing shoots have a characteristic reddish color. In autumn it produces solitary acorns, small and tapered, 1-2 cm long, dark brown in colour, with a thin, smooth and streaked dome. This species evolutionarily represents an ancestor of current oaks and can reach 10-12 m in height. Use Ideal for creating both free and topiary hedges or as an isolated tree.

    Pedoclimatic needs

It prefers deep, fertile, well-drained soils, adapting even to partially compact and clayey ones. It should be planted in full sun. Despite being an evergreen species, it is very rustic and resists frosts down to -15°/-18°c.

    Sowing

From autumn to early winter. The seeds are recalcitrant: they cannot be stored for long and quickly lose germination. They should be sown immediately after receiving them.
