Genus of about 600 species of monoecious, semi-deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs, widely distributed in woodlands and scrublands of the Northern Hemisphere. Quercus phillyraeoides is a compact, evergreen shrub or small bushy tree, with gray bark, which scales into plates in mature specimens. Leathery, ovate, shiny, dark green leaves with finely serrated margins. The new shoots have a characteristic reddish color. It can reach 9 m in height. It bears solitary, small, tapered acorns with thin, not very enveloping domes. Use Ideal for creating both free and topiary hedges or as an isolated bush.

    Pedoclimatic needs

It prefers deep, fertile, well-drained and preferably alkaline soils, but is also suitable for growing in dry, stony, superficial and acidic ones. It should be planted in full sun. Despite being an evergreen species, it is fairly rustic, resisting cold up to -15°/-18°c.

From autumn to early winter. The seeds are recalcitrant: they cannot be stored for long and quickly lose germination. They should be sown immediately after receiving them.
