Citrus sinensis cv "Sanguinello" - blood orange (Fitocella)

Genus of about 12 species of evergreen trees and shrubs, native to the Far East. Citrus sinensis is the most important species among those included in the citrus group. In Italy it is widely cultivated in the south. Orange trees are small evergreen trees with compact foliage and can reach a height of 8-10 m. The branches are sometimes thorny, the leaves are dark green, ovate or ovate-elliptical, pointed, with winged petiole. The flowers gathered in axillary racemes are very fragrant, have 5 petals and numerous stamens, they are called orange blossoms. The orange tree has a single flowering in March-April. The fruits are berries of a particular type (hesperidium), divided into segments, with yellow or orange peel when ripe, rich in essential oils. The pulp is juicy, rich in sugars and organic acids, yellow-orange or dark red in color depending on the variety. Sanguinello is a late-ripening variety with small-sized fruits, which have a dark red pulp color when ripe.

Pedoclimatic needs

Orange trees are plants suitable for hot climate areas and do not resist cold and frost; in Italy they are grown in the south, on the islands and where temperatures do not fall below 0°/-2°C. Citrus fruits prefer loose and fertile soils, possibly with a good organic substance content and avoid excessively calcareous soils. Orange trees do not resist drought and during the dry season they must be watered and fertilized regularly.
