Genus of 15 species of deciduous trees and shrubs, mainly from the woodlands of southeastern Europe, the Himalayas, eastern Asia and North America. The aesculus hippocastanum is a splendid tree that can reach 25-30 m in height and its deciduous crown can reach 10 m in diameter. The leaves are bright green on the upper side and light green on the lower side, they are opposite palmate-septate in shape. Flowering occurs in spring and the flowers are gathered in a panicle inflorescence, white and small in size. The fruits are greenish capsules equipped with spines that open into three valves and contain a large shiny brown seed that resembles a chestnut but unlike the latter, the fruits of the horse chestnut are not edible.
