Genus of over 200 species of rosette-forming monocarpic perennials and succulents of desert and mountainous regions of North, Central, and South America. The American agave is a medium-large sized succulent plant with a bushy habit, up to 2-3 meters tall, characterized by a short and stocky stem. The persistent and fleshy leaves reach a length of 80-100 cm and have a spiny margin and pointed apex. They are green-grey in color. When mature, the plant produces inflorescences up to 5-6 meters high on which there are greenish yellow flowers. After flowering, which occurs around the 15th-20th year of age, the plant dies.
Pedoclimatic needs
It prefers drained soil without water stagnation, preferably with a good limestone content. Grow in full sun. It adapts to being grown both in large pots, in the ground or in flowerbeds. Moderately rustic species, it resists short night frosts and minimum temperatures reaching -4°/-8°c. During the dry season it resists drought well, although it benefits from regular irrigation by waiting for the earth to dry between one irrigation and another.Botanical Information
