Genus of over 200 species of rosette-forming monocarpic perennials and succulents of desert and mountainous regions of North and Central America. The agave macroacantha cv viridis has moderate growth, reaching 30/50 cm in diameter when mature. It has a regular and compact shape with short and thin blue-green leaves edged with reddish-black thorns and with a robust black apical thorn up to 5-7 cm long. The peculiarity of this cultivar is that it has short, green leaves unlike the classic macroacantha agave which has glaucous leaves. It has a very short stem and the leaves develop like a rosette. After 10-15 years it produces an inflorescence up to 2-3 m high on which numerous yellow flowers bloom. After flowering the plant dies.
Pedoclimatic needs
To be grown in well-drained and mineral-rich soil, without stagnation. Watering must be regular during the growing season, waiting for the soil to dry between one watering and the next. It prefers full sun exposure. This species is not very rustic and resists minimum temperatures down to -4°/-6°c if kept dry, for this reason in cold areas during the winter it must be placed in a cold greenhouse or sheltered room.Botanical Information
