Agave parrasana - broad-leaved agave (15 cm pot)
Agave parrasana - broad-leaved agave (15 cm pot)
Genus of over 200 species of perennials and succulent monocarpic rosettes, from the desert and mountain regions of North and Central America. Agave parrasana is a medium-sized plant with a single body or tufted as it produces several root suckers. Compact rosette up to 60-80 cm large, formed by enlarged, oval leaves, glaucous green in color with small marginal spines and a reddish brown apical spine. After 15-20 years the plant produces an apical inflorescence up to 2-3 m high with numerous yellow flowers. After flowering the plant deteriorates and dies.
Pedoclimatic requirements
Given its small size, this species is particularly suitable for growing in large pots or flowerbeds. Grow in well-drained soils preferably with good limestone content and enriched with a little organic substance. Watering should be regular from March to September, suspending it in the winter months. It prefers full sun exposure. This species is fairly rustic and tolerates frosts as long as they are not too intense and prolonged up to -4°/-6°c.
During the dry season it resists drought well, although it benefits from regular irrigation by waiting for the soil to dry between one irrigation and the next.
