Agave rzedowskiana - Dr. Rzedowski's Agave (Pot 15 cm)
Agave rzedowskiana - Dr. Rzedowski's Agave (Pot 15 cm)
Genus of over 200 species of perennials and succulent monocarpic rosettes, from the desert and mountain regions of North America. Agave rzedowskiana is a perennial species that unlike other agaves does not die after flowering. This small agave forms small tufts of compact rosettes over time. The linear, rigid, more or less curved leaves, 15 to 25 cm long, have numerous longitudinal streaks and are glaucous-blue in color. At the apex of each leaf there is a small, thin, black-reddish thorn. The spike-shaped inflorescence, 1.5 to 2 m high, bears a large number of yellowish flowers.
Pedoclimatic needs
Drained soil without stagnant water, preferably with good limestone content. Grow in full sun. It adapts to being grown both in pots and in the ground or in flowerbeds. Fairly rustic species, it resists short night frosts -2°/-4°c. During the dry season it resists drought well, even if it benefits from regular irrigations, waiting for the soil to dry between one irrigation and the next.
