Genus of over 200 species of rosette-forming monocarpic perennials and succulents of desert and mountainous regions of central and southern North America. Agave stricta echinus is a perennial species of medium-small size with a compact rosette, characterized by linear, rigid leaves with a smooth margin more or less arched, 15 to 40 cm long with a characteristic green-glaucous color and a pungent apical thorn of greyish-brown colour. It is one of the few agave species that does not die after flowering. It produces a spike-shaped inflorescence, 1.5 to 2 meters high, which bears a large number of flowers whose color can vary from yellow to purple.
Pedoclimatic needs
It prefers drained soil without water stagnation, preferably with a good limestone content. Grow in full sun. It adapts to being grown both in large pots, in the ground or in flowerbeds. Moderately rustic species, it resists short frosts and minimum temperatures reaching -6°/-8°c. During the dry season it resists drought well, although it benefits from regular irrigation by waiting for the earth to dry between one irrigation and another.Botanical Information
