Genus of over 200 species of rosette-forming monocarpic perennials and succulents of desert and mountainous regions of North and Central America. This agave is particularly attractive due to the compact shape of the rosettes and its curling filaments. It is made up of thin leaves up to 20 cm long, light green in color with a lighter central band and a brown apical spine. Agave x leopoldii does not have marginal spines but has numerous curled filaments that develop from the sides of the leaves. This species is the result of a hybrid between Agave filifera subs. Filifera and agave filifera subs. Schidigera. After 10-15 years the plant produces an inflorescence up to 2-3 m high with creamy white flowers. After flowering the plant dies.
Pedoclimatic needs
Grow in not too fertile and well-drained soil, in full sun. This species is moderately rustic and resists short frosts down to -2/-4°c if kept dry. During the dry season it resists heat and drought well, although it benefits from regular irrigation by waiting for the earth to dry between one irrigation and another.Botanical Information
