Genus of 300 species of evergreen perennials with rosettes of small to large leaves. Some are shrub-like, a few are arborescent. They can be found at various altitudes in the Cape Verde Islands, in tropical and southern Africa, in Madagascar and in the Arabian Peninsula. Aloe ferox var. marlothii is an erect succulent up to 3 m tall. Over the years the plants lignify at the base forming a single unbranched trunk covered by old, now dry leaves. The glaucous-green leaves are up to 1 m long and have numerous small, reddish-brown sharp teeth on both the margins and the lamina. In late spring the mature plants produce spectacular branched apical inflorescences, with numerous yellow-orange tubular flowers. The nectar of these flowers is very popular with various species of small birds that feed on them methodically.
Pedoclimatic needs
It requires sandy and well-drained soil without stagnation. It should be grown in full sun or partial shade. It adapts to being grown both in large pots and in the ground or in large flowerbeds. This species is not rustic and does not tolerate temperatures below 4°/6 °c. During the dry season it tolerates drought well, but benefits from regular irrigation.
