Genus that includes 9-10 species of deciduous terrestrial orchids occurring in the cool or temperate regions of China, Taiwan and Japan. Bletilla striata is a deciduous, terrestrial orchid. Light green, lanceolate leaves 30-50 cm. Light green emerging pseudo bulbs. Purple-pink flowers, gathered in inflorescences 15-20 cm high, composed of 8-15 flowers.

Pedoclimatic needs

It adapts to all types of soil as long as it is soft, with a good content of organic substance and well drained. It prefers shaded positions but also adapts to partial shade. Species of easy cultivation and generous flowering, ideal for beginners. It resists low temperatures down to -6°/-8°c; if the cold is persistent, protect the pseudo bulbs with a 3-8 cm layer of dry leaves. It adapts to being grown both in pots and in the ground to create borders or to be associated with other herbaceous perennials.
