Genus composed of only 2 species of succulents closely related to nolina. They grow in semi-desert areas of Mexico. Calibanus hookeri is a very long-lived succulent, just over 1 m tall, which has a characteristic basal swelling which in adult specimens can exceed one meter in diameter. In this swollen stem (caudex) the plant accumulates water as a reserve source for the dry season. At the end of the swelling there are tufts of linear leathery blue-glaucous leaves up to 50-60 cm long. After 15-20 years the plant produces creamy white flowers in spring collected in small inflorescences 20-70 cm high.
Pedoclimatic needs
Rustic plant that can withstand frosts as long as they are not too intense and prolonged and resists down to -12°/-14°c. Being a slow-growing species, it is suitable for cultivation in pots. Particularly decorative plant due to its swollen stem topped with tufts of leaves. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil, in full sun. During the dry season it tolerates drought well, although it benefits from regular irrigation, waiting for the earth to dry between one administration and another. During autumn/winter, watering must be reduced or suspended, as the plant goes dormant and uses the water reserves stored inside the stem.Botanical Information
