Genus of over 250 species of evergreen shrubs and small trees. These plants grow on acidic soils in forested areas of Asia. The Camellia sasanqua is a shrub, or small evergreen tree with an erect and spreading habit, up to 5-7 m tall. The leaves are elliptical, dark green in color, shiny, with serrated margins. Unlike C. japonica which flowers in winter, the flowering of C. sasanqua is much earlier and begins at the beginning of autumn and continues until winter. The flowers of this variety are simple and pink in color and have a delicate vanilla scent.
Pedoclimatic needs
Much appreciated for their delicate autumn blooms, the scent of the flowers and the magnificent foliage, they are suitable for even small parks and gardens. It loves cool and humid climates, preferring exposure to the sun or partial shade. It prefers loose, well-drained soil with a sub-acid reaction and a good content of organic matter. Sasanqua camellias are fairly rustic plants that tolerate frosts down to -8°/-10°C. The cold does not cause damage to the branches and foliage but ruins the flowering. However, snowfalls are very harmful, damaging the foliage by breaking the branches.Botanical Information
