Genus of 35 species of deciduous trees native to the woods of Europe, Asia and North America. Carpinus betulus is a very long-lived deciduous tree, of medium height reaching 20 m, with pyramidal or irregularly rounded foliage in isolated specimens. The bark is smooth greyish and irregular due to the ribbed and grooved stem. The leaves are alternate, simple with a green serrated edge which turn yellow in the autumn period. The flowering period is April, the inflorescences develop into bracts, each of which contains a single pendulous stamen of the male flower. The fruit is an achene.
Pedoclimatic needs
It adapts to moist, fresh and well-drained soil types, with a neutral or slightly acidic PH. It grows well in full or partial shade. It is used in parks and gardens along avenues, as an isolated tree, or in groups to create groves. Also very suitable for the creation of topiary hedges. Entirely rustic plant, it tolerates even intense and persistent frosts.Sowing
