Genus of 15 species of arboreal, woody-stemmed, evergreen succulents. They are found in the hills and forests of southeast Asia and Australia. The cordyline australis is a tree native to New Zealand, in nature it reaches 8-10 m in height, presenting an erect stem, branched at the top and bearing at the top a tuft of linear, long leaves, arranged in a rosette, falling downwards and intense green in color. It can be grown outdoors in coastal and hilly areas, being fairly rustic, it flowers early, producing attractive white inflorescences in the form of feathery panicles, 1 m wide.
Pedoclimatic needs
A fairly rustic species, it can be grown in the olive climate, withstanding short frosts down to -7°/-9°C without damage. The cordyline genus requires very bright exposure, preferring full sun. It adapts to all soils as long as they are not too compact and without stagnation. Watering must be abundant in summer, taking care to avoid water stagnation which could compromise the health of the root system. Ambient humidity should be good and raised by spraying and misting the foliage, using water at room temperature.Botanical Information
