Genus of about 45 species of mainly deciduous shrubs and small trees, coming from northern temperate regions. Cornus kousa is a shrub or small deciduous tree that reaches 5-6 m in height. The leaves are dark green ovals that turn into magnificent pink-reddish shades in autumn. From March to May, at the apex of the branches, it produces numerous small inflorescences made up of minute yellow or green flowers. The characteristic and beauty of this species is that of producing, under each inflorescence, four large pure white bracts, which look like the petals of a large flower. The fruit is a very decorative red edible drupe.
Pedoclimatic needs
It adapts to all types of soil, preferring fresh, well-drained and rich in organic substance. It requires a position sheltered from the wind and sunny or partial shade exposure. An averagely rustic plant, it tolerates temperatures reaching -6°/-8°C. This species loves humidity and cannot tolerate drought: for this characteristic, during the dry season the plants must be watered regularly and frequently.Botanical Information
