Genus of about 45 species of mainly deciduous shrubs and small trees, coming from temperate northern regions. Cornus mas is a small deciduous tree, vigorously spreading, with ovate, dark gray leaves, which become purple-red in autumn. At the end of winter, before the leaves, it produces yellow flowers in small umbels. The fleshy, vivid red oblong-ellipsoid fruits are produced in late summer and are edible when ripe. It can reach 5 m in height. Its seasoned wood is very hard and valuable and is excellent for cabinet-making work.
