Genus of 10-15 species of deciduous trees and shrubs native to northern temperate regions, usually in wooded lands. Corylus avellana is a shrub or small tree up to 6-8 m tall, erect, very branched due to the numerous suckers that develop from the base. The weakly tomentose and widely chordate leaves, with a rounded apex and toothed margin, are up to 10 cm long and closely resemble those of the black alder. At the end of winter and beginning of spring it produces very decorative yellow pendulous catkins, 4-6 cm long. Between the end of summer and the beginning of autumn it produces numerous fruits which are edible hazelnuts, partially enclosed by initially green bracts.
