Genus of 200 species or more species of deciduous, sometimes semi-deciduous, usually thorny trees and shrubs, native to the woods and scrublands of northern temperate regions. Crataegus monogyna is a very long-lived shrub or small deciduous tree, up to 4-6 meters tall, characterized by a rounded crown and a well-branched trunk, greyish in color in young plants and brown in adult ones. The lateral branches are generally equipped with sharp thorns up to 2 cm long. The leaves are alternate, simple, with toothed margins, and are bright green in colour. The pleasantly scented flowers are white or pink in color and appear gathered in erect inflorescences. The fruits are fleshy red drupes gathered in dense clusters that remain on the plant until late winter.
