    Altezza della pianta: 10-20cm cm
Genus of about 15 species of cycads that grow on dry and stony slopes, in semi-arid deserts and in light woods in an area that goes from Madagascar to southern and south-eastern Asia, Australia and the islands of the Pacific Ocean. Cycas revoluta is a very long-lived cycad which in appearance resembles a palmette both for the stem, which is not very branched, and for the arrangement of the leaves, large and pinnate placed in a spiral at the top of the stem, like a crown. The stem reaches a diameter of approximately 20-30 cm and has a very slow growth, very old specimens can exceptionally reach 6-7 m in height, but generally reach 2-3 m in cultivation. The leaves, bright green in color and up to 1.5 meters long, are pinnate, slightly arched, shiny and pointed. The individual leaflets, rigid and thin, are 8-18 cm long; those closest to the stem change into the shape of thorns. The young leaves appear in spring at the apex of the stem in large groups; at the moment of emergence from the stem they are curled up and covered by thick hair; within a few days they unfold and quickly reach the appearance of mature leaves. This plant is dioecious with male and female individuals. After 15-20 years they produce particular inflorescences called cones. The female flower is almost spherical, creamy yellow and contains numerous red-orange seeds inside. The male flower is longer and droopy when mature and produces only pollen.

    Pedoclimatic needs

It grows excellently in sandy or medium-textured soil, well drained and fertilized. The best climates for its cultivation are those with hot, humid summers and mild winters. This species is also partially rustic and resists short frosts down to -6°/-8°C. In case of persistent cold the leaves can burn and it is necessary to protect the top of the plant with straw or non-woven fabric. Given its slow and contained growth, it is ideal for growing in large pots for terraces or balconies. It is also widely used in parks and gardens for the beauty of its foliage and its elegant shape. Use as a single plant or in groups in flowerbeds or lawns.
