Dasylirion serratifolium - dasilirio (Square vase 7x7x8 cm)
Dasylirion serratifolium - dasilirio (Square vase 7x7x8 cm)
Genus composed of about twenty species of evergreen succulent shrubs or trees that are very long-lived, with rosette leaves arranged around the apices, similar to the yucca, that grow in the dry mountainous regions and deserts of the southern United States and Mexico. Dasylirion serratifolium is an evergreen succulent that with age forms one or more trunks up to 1.5-2.5 m tall, generally prostrate. The leaves arranged in a rosette are erect, then curved, pale green or glaucous and have the edge with numerous small hooked yellow spines. At the ends of the leaves there are fibrous tufts. After 10-15 years it produces an inflorescence up to 2.5-4 m long with numerous flowers from the apex. After flowering the plant does not die, but clumps together forming large tufts over time.
Pedoclimatic requirements
Grow in poor, well-drained soil, in full sun. A fairly rustic species, it resists short frosts down to -9°/-12°C. Due to the elegance and harmony of the rosettes, these plants are widely used in parks and gardens. Being very drought-resistant plants, they can be used to decorate flowerbeds and gardens without water.
