Dioscorea batatas - plant of light (Square vase 9x9x20 cm)

Genus of 600 species of tubular climbing perennials, deciduous or evergreen, monoecious or dioecious, some of which are succulent, of the tropical forest and of the dry, often arid, areas of the tropical and subtropical regions. Discorea batatas is a tuberous, herbaceous perennial plant with a climbing habit. Light green heart-shaped leaves. During the cold season the stems and leaves dry out, but the numerous tubers under the earth remain viable and produce new vegetation the following spring. Plant used for millennia as a food and in traditional Chinese medicine where it is considered a "sacred plant" and known as the plant of youth.

Pedoclimatic needs

Grow in fertile, humiferous soil, in partial shade. Very rustic plant, the bulbs resist frosts down to -10°/-14°C.
