Genus of about 150 species of perennial cacti, from spherical to cylindrical or columnar, of semi-desert regions, mainly Mexico, and also of the southern United States. The genus Dolichothele was separated from Mammillaria and is characterized by hooked central spines, carrot-shaped roots and generally larger flowers. Dolichothele surculosa is a small tufted cactus that forms dense groups up to 20-30 cm in diameter. The individual globose stems do not exceed 3-5 cm in diameter and are light green in colour. The tubercles are pronounced, 5-8 mm long. Radial spines 18-25 golden yellow, hooked terminal spine 3-8 mm long, reddish brown, especially in backlight. The pretty flowers that appear in spring are 1.5-2.5 cm in diameter and are light yellow.
Pedoclimatic needs
It should be grown in sandy and predominantly mineral soils, ensuring excellent drainage. Watering must be regular from March to September with a suspension in the winter months. It prefers full sun exposure and in winter cannot tolerate temperatures below -5°C, for this reason it is recommended to keep the plant sheltered during the colder periods. Being a small species with limited development, it is ideal for growing in pots on terraces and balconies. In areas with a mild climate, it can also be grown in small pockets of soil in rock gardens or dry stone walls.Botanical Information
