Genus of over 100 species of trees, shrubs, sufructic to perennials with a woody base, deciduous, semi-persistent and evergreen, usually thorny, present in the thickets and exposed slopes of tropical regions throughout the world. Erythrina x bidwillii is a hybrid obtained from the cross between Erythrina herbacea x Erythrina crista-galli. It appears as a shrub or small deciduous tree up to 4-6 meters tall. It has a broad and compact crown with numerous rather disorderly branches. The young branches are provided with thorns. The leaves are compound, odd-pinnate and light green in color. The flowers, which appear from late spring to early summer, are dark red and are gathered in very decorative apical inflorescences.
Pedoclimatic requirements
It adapts to all types of soil, as long as it is well drained. It prefers sunny positions, but adapts well to partial shade. It can be planted in climates where temperatures do not fall below 0°C for long periods. Young plants should be protected in the cold season. Being a small to medium-sized plant, it can also be grown in pots.
