Genus of about 800 species of trees, shrubs, woody climbers, mostly evergreen that live in the forests of tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world. Ficus benghalensis is a large, very spreading evergreen tree native to India. The characteristic of this species, like many other ficus, is the formation of numerous aerial roots that form on the branches of adult plants and, reaching the ground, form real columns that support the branches as they grow. It has large, oval or elliptical, leathery, light green leaves, 12-18 cm long with evident veins. The spherical fruits, 2-3 cm long, are initially green and become red as they ripen. It can reach 20-25 m in height but, thanks to its aerial roots, it develops mainly in width, being able to cover a surface area of over 1000 m2.
Pedoclimatic needs
Grow in humus-rich, moist and well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. This species is not rustic, does not resist frost and should be grown where temperatures do not fall below +2°/+4°C.
