Genus of 9 species of deciduous trees and shrubs growing in the woodlands of eastern Africa and eastern and southern Asia, cultivated for their beautiful foliage. Firmana simplex is a deciduous tree up to 10-12 m tall with green-veined bark, even as an adult. Expanded and leafy foliage. The branches bear large leaves similar in shape to those of the plane tree but with smooth margins and larger dimensions. It flowers in summer with erect inflorescences and small yellowish flowers that produce abundant nectar. The fruits are follicles surrounded by large bracts, each bearing two seeds similar to peppercorns, but light brown in color. It takes on a beautiful yellow color in autumn. Widespread in China and Japan, it is cultivated here as an ornamental plant.
Pedoclimatic needs
It adapts to all types of soil, it tolerates the cold but not above -10°/-12°c. It prefers sunny positions and better if sheltered from strong winds. In summer it benefits from regular watering.Botanical Information
