Genus of 2 species of deciduous, low-growing shrubs native to the woods and swamps of the southeastern United States. Fothergilla major is a small deciduous shrub up to 1.5-2 m tall, with a thick and compact habit. It has obovate and almost rounded leaves, alternate, shiny, dark green, with toothed margins, which take on magnificent red-orange or yellow-pink shades in autumn. In late spring it produces, before or together with the leaves, 3/5 cm long terminal spikes of fragrant white flowers, sometimes tinged with pink.
Pedoclimatic needs
It should be grown in fresh and well-drained soil, possibly with a neutral or sub-acid reaction with a good content of organic substance. Very suitable for creating borders and to be associated with other small shrubs. Rustic up to -15°/-18°C.Botanical Information
