Genus of approximately 20 species of perennial plants, originating from a wide range of humid or arid habitats in the Mediterranean regions, tropical Asia, and North and South America. Glycyrrhiza glabra is a deciduous shrubby plant that reaches a height of 80-120 cm. This species is rhizomatous; in fact it has an underground stem that grows horizontally in the ground called the rhizome, from which the secondary roots and shoots grow. The impartipinnate leaves are intense green in color. The flowers are blue-violet in color gathered in inflorescences in the axils of the leaves. The fruit is an indehiscent flattened legume. The roots of plants that are at least 3 years old make up the famous liquorice and are collected and dried to be used in herbal medicine and cooking.
