Shrub or small deciduous tree, up to 6-8 m tall with open crown and spreading branches. It has a smooth greyish white bark and entire heart-shaped leaves 8-10 cm long with a pointed apex and serrated margins. In spring it produces numerous inflorescences with yellowish-white flowers. The small fruits are edible berries and appear numerous in autumn. They are orange-red in color and persist in winter on bare branches, giving the plant a pleasant appearance. Dioecious species.
