Genus of about 300 species of erect rhizomatous and bulbous perennials, sometimes with fleshy roots, widespread in a great variety of habitats in the Northern Hemisphere. Iris Germanica is a herbaceous perennial up to 50-80 meters tall, with a horizontal rhizome formed by oval segments, each of which produces two new segments on the sides of its anterior portion. The leaves and flowering stem develop at the apex of these rhizomes, while cylindrical roots develop from the lower surface. The leaves are up to 50 cm long and are lanceolate-linear with the base widened into a sheath that envelops the next leaf; they have a glabrous and glaucous surface and are covered with a waxy bloom which prevents water from wetting them. The flowers, which appear from April to June, can be of various colors: white, purple, yellow or speckled. The fruit is an oval-oblong brown capsule which opens into its three valves when ripe; contains some perfectly spherical and shiny black seeds.

    Pedoclimatic needs

Rustic species, it resists cold and frost down to -14°/-16°C. Grow in poor, well-drained soil exposed to full sun or partial shade. In soils richer in organic substance the plants will grow more. Much appreciated for its beautiful flowering and delicate foliage, it is ideal for low maintenance parks and gardens. This species is very drought resistant and can be grown both in pots and in soil for waterless gardens. In the case of particularly dry and hot summers, the leaves can dry up and reappear in autumn after the first rains.
