Genus of about 300 species of erect rhizomatous and bulbous perennials, sometimes with fleshy roots, widespread in a great variety of habitats in the Northern Hemisphere. Iris pseudacorus is a rhizomatous perennial plant up to 80-150 cm tall. The leaves, of a greenish-grey colour, are spade-shaped, erect, sharp, parallelinervie, are folded longitudinally along the median rib so that the two halves adhere to each other, except in the lower part where, being detached, they form a sort of sheath. In spring it produces inflorescences 100-120 cm tall which bear light yellow flowers. The fruits are large trilocular capsules containing numerous flat, yellowish-brown seeds.
Pedoclimatic needs
Rustic species, it resists cold and intense frosts down to -18°/-20°c. It loves sunny exposures but also tolerates partial shade. It is a marsh species that grows along the banks of rivers, lakes and canals. Due to this characteristic it can also be grown in stagnant clay and marshy soils. It is often used along ponds and bodies of water for the beauty of its flowering and elegant foliage. Also used for phytoremediation.Sowing
