Genus of about 300 species of erect rhizomatous and bulbous perennials, sometimes with fleshy roots, widespread in a great variety of habitats in the Northern Hemisphere. The Iris bicolor is a perennial, rhizomatous herbaceous plant, which over time forms a large clump composed of numerous pale green, linear, thin leaves, up to 80-120 cm long and only 2-3cm wide, divided by a showy central vein. It is native to South Africa where it is used in public gardens. From early spring to late summer it produces countless medium-sized flowers and are yellow with three dark purple spots, each surrounded by an orange outline. The flowers of this species are short-lived, but the plant produces numerous ones, which bloom in succession for a long period of time. The fruits are dehiscent capsules when ripe, containing numerous seeds.
Pedoclimatic needs
Rustic species, to be grown in full sun or partial shade. This species is very resistant to drought and does not require irrigation. It prefers soils rich in organic substances and well drained.Botanical Information
