Genus of about 300 species of erect rhizomatous and bulbous perennials, sometimes with fleshy roots, widespread in a great variety of habitats in the Northern Hemisphere. The Iris bicolor is a perennial, rhizomatous herbaceous plant, which over time forms a large clump composed of numerous pale green, linear, thin leaves, up to 80-120 cm long and only 2-3cm wide, divided by a showy central vein. It is native to South Africa where it is used in public gardens. From early spring to late summer it produces countless medium-sized flowers and are yellow with three dark purple spots, each surrounded by an orange outline. The flowers of this species are short-lived, but the plant produces numerous ones, which bloom in succession for a long period of time. The fruits are dehiscent capsules when ripe, containing numerous seeds.
