Genus of some species of evergreen, rounded shrub, present in the scrub, in the woods and on the edges of woods of the Mediterranean region.
Myrtus communis var. microphylla is a small bush with a globose and very compact shape, up to 1.5-2 m tall. The leaves are small, opposite, strictly elliptical, shiny, very aromatic, dark green in color. This variety differs from Myrtus communis for its dwarf shape and very small leaves. From mid to late summer it produces numerous creamy white flowers, sometimes tinged with pink, with 5 petals, with showy central tufts of white stamens. The fruits are small oblong-ellipsoid berries, black-purple.
Pedoclimatic requirements
Grow in drained soil without water stagnation, preferably with low limestone content. Grow in full sun or partial shade. It is suitable for being grown both in pots and in the ground or in flowerbeds in regions with a mild climate. This variety tolerates minimum cultivation temperatures between -4°/-6°C for short periods. Due to its globular and compact shape it is particularly suitable for creating borders, spherical plants or to be grown in pots for terraces and gardens.
