Genus of about 20 species of evergreen tree succulents, closely related to Beaucarnea. They grow in semi-desert areas and bushland from the southern United States to Guatemala. Noliona texana is a caespitous succulent forming low, wide tufts up to 1 m in diameter, similar in appearance to tufts of grasses. The leaves are arched, linear, thin, leathery, dark green and 90-120 cm long. The mature plants produce creamy white flowers in spring, collected in terminal panicles 80-100 cm high. After flowering the plant does not die, but produces one or more shoots from the apex, thus starting the tillering process. Particularly decorative plant due to the dense tufts of curved leaves and the small white or pink inflorescences.
Pedoclimatic needs
Fairly rustic plant that tolerates frost. It can also be grown outdoors in a continental climate with minimum temperatures reaching -10°/-12°C for not too long periods. Being a slow-growing species, it is suitable for cultivation in pots. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil, in full sun. During the dry season it tolerates drought well, although it benefits from regular irrigation, waiting for the earth to dry between one administration and another.Botanical Information
