Genus of about 20 species of evergreen trees and shrubs, from the arid rocky places of the Mediterranean, Africa and Central Asia to Australia. Olea europea var. itrana is a large olive tree that produces fruit, olives. This variety has a dual purpose; suitable for both squeezing and brining fruits. Olea europaea is a slow-growing evergreen tree with rounded foliage and opposite, leathery, elliptical to lanceolate, irregularly toothed leaves, green-grey on the upper surface, green-grey-silvery on the lower one. In summer they bloom in axillary panicles, tiny creamy white, fragrant flowers, followed by green, globose to ovoid, edible fruits, which turn black as they ripen.
Pedoclimatic needs
Grow in deep, fertile, extremely drained soil in full sun, but it is also suitable for growing in less fertile and superficial soils. Not too rustic a species, it only resists short, not too prolonged frosts down to -6°-8°C.Botanical Information
