Genus of over 400 species of climbers with tendrils mostly evergreen and some annual, perennial, shrubby and arboreal. They live in woods, on rocks or in prairies in tropical America and Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Passiflora edulis is a vigorous, fast-growing herbaceous climbing plant that produces the famous passion fruits. It has graduated flowering and fruiting as the flowers are emitted as the shoots lengthen. The fruits are berries, ranging in color from purple to yellow, and contain numerous small seeds immersed in a very fragrant yellow gelatinous mass. Passiflora edulis flavicarpa (maracuja) has yellow fruit; larger than the brown-fruited one but less rustic and less resistant to the cold.
Pedoclimatic needs
It adapts quite well to the climate of Sicily where, in winter, it must be protected as it suffers temperatures below 0 °C. It prefers fresh, loose soil and does not tolerate water stagnation. It lends itself to being grown as an espalier or pergola.Sowing
