Genus of approximately 350 species of deciduous or evergreen herbaceous or succulent plants, originating mainly from southern Africa. Pelargonium tetragonum is a deciduous succulent up to 50-70 cm tall, often with creeping and prostrate branches. It has large, succulent stems up to 5-8 mm wide with three or four edges. The 2-3 cm wide leaves are almost round with more or less marked lobes and are green on the upper side and purple on the lower side. The leaves fall during the dry season. The flowers that appear in spring are generally two on each branch, but sometimes even 3 or 4 and have pink petals. The flower is zygomorphic with 2 large petals pointing upwards and two much smaller ones pointing downwards.
Pedoclimatic needs
Grow in moderately fertile, very well-drained soil in the sun. Not rustic. In winter it resists up to +1°/+3°C and must be kept dry. It can be grown in the ground in Mediterranean gardens, where temperatures do not fall below freezing. In colder climates it can be grown in pots, placed outdoors during spring and summer and sheltered during autumn and winter.Botanical Information
