An evergreen tree characterized by a broad and leafy crown. The dark and smooth bark cracks in mature specimens. The leaves, up to 20 cm long, are whole, oval or lanceolate in shape. The fruit, between 10 and 20 cm long, is a drupe with green or black skin depending on the variety and yellow-green pulp. The avocado fruit is very rich in unsaturated fats, especially oleic acid, and holds the world record for the fruit with the fattiest pulp. Thanks to its sweet and delicate flavor, it is used in many culinary preparations, the most famous of which is guacamole, a delicious Mexican sauce for flavoring meat and vegetables. The plant can reach a maximum height of 15-20 meters.
Pedoclimatic requirements
It adapts to any type of soil, as long as it is well drained and not excessively calcareous. It prefers volcanic, deep, fertile soils with a good content of organic matter. During the dry season it benefits from regular irrigation. The plant is sensitive to the cold and can be grown outdoors in climates where temperatures do not fall below 0°/-2°C for long periods. It can be grown outdoors in the citrus climate.
