Genus of 17 species of single or multiple trunk palms originating mainly from the tropical or subtropical forest or low scrubland of the Canary Islands, Africa, Crete, western and southern Asia up to the Philippines. Phoenix canariensis var porphyrocarpa is a large palm with a solitary trunk, up to 20 m tall. Dark green pinnate leaves, with spines in the basal part, up to 2m long. Small flowers gathered in decorative inflorescences. Orange-red fruits in characteristic very attractive bunches. Dioecious species.
Pedoclimatic needs
Partially rustic, it resists short frosts down to -6°-/-8°c. Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. It benefits from regular watering during the summer.
