Monospecific genus originating from the Eurasian area and now widespread throughout the world. Phragmites australis is a rhizomatous perennial herbaceous plant up to 2-2.5 m tall. It has opposite leaves up to 40-60 cm long, lanceolate or linear and glaucous green in colour. This plant, due to the numerous rhizomes, forms dense and extensive groups (reeds). In summer it produces showy inflorescences up to 3/4 m high at the apex of the culms, bronze when ripe.
Pedoclimatic needs
Grow in moist, possibly stagnant soil. Sunny or partial shade exposure. Very resistant to cold -16°/-20°C. Typically invasive due to the underground rhizomes that spread, it must be controlled by planting it in flower beds or delimiting it with guard ditches at least 70-90 cm deep or by burying a metal containment plate transversally to a depth of at least 70-80 cm around the entire plant. area to be delimited. It is widely used for environmental recovery and redevelopment interventions or as a species for phytopurification. It is also suitable for free hedges or for creating reed beds in humid areas, a precious refuge for many species of aquatic animals.Botanical Information
