Physalis alkekengi - Chinese lantern (1 seed pack)

Perennial shrub with drooping leaves that can reach 1.5 m in height. The flowers are yellow, bell-shaped and small in size. The characteristic element of the physalis alkekengi are the fruits which recall the shape of small lanterns as the globular orange berry is surmounted by a membrane which, when dry, allows a glimpse of the bright color of the fruit. The berry of the physalis alkekengi is edible, but only the berry since being a species of the Solanaceae family, the plant can contain toxic substances.

Pedoclimatic needs

It adapts to calcareous and well-drained soils with the presence of humus. It prefers exposure in full sun or partial shade. It fears low temperatures and being a deciduous plant in winter it is advisable to protect it from frosts with a thick layer of mulch.
