Picea abies - spruce, spruce (Square vase 12x12x20 cm)

Genus of 30-40 species of evergreen, monoecious arboreal conifers of the forests of the cold-temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Picea abies is an evergreen tree that reaches 40 m in height. The trunk is sturdy and straight, the bark is thin and reddish. The foliage is conical and composed of needle-like leaves up to 2.5 cm long and light green in colour. Picea abies is a monoecious dicline species therefore it has male and female flowers on the same plant, the former are small cones that develop at the base of the female cones at the apex of the foliage, while the latter, after fertilization, are cones of larger dimensions large, green or reddish in color which fall when ripe.

Pedoclimatic needs

It adapts to moist but well-drained soil. It prefers exposure in full sun or partial shade. Mountain tree that does not fear the cold and even intense and very prolonged snowfalls down to -22°/-25°. Even though it is a mountain species, it is still very acclimatisable to a Mediterranean climate as long as it is helped with regular irrigation during the dry season. Due to the elegance of its foliage and its majestic appearance, it is widely used in parks and gardens. To be used as a single tree, to create groves, or exposed to the north as a windbreak hedge to protect from cold winds.
