Genus that includes about 120 species of evergreen, monoecious tree or shrub conifers, long widespread in the forests of the northern hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to Central America, in Europe, northern Africa and south-eastern Asia. Pinus nigra is an evergreen conifer with a slender shape and pyramidal foliage which becomes expanded in adult individuals. The trunk and branches have light brown or greyish bark that cracks and flakes off in plaques in mature specimens. It has dark green needle-like leaves up to 15-20 cm long. The fruits are elongated cones up to 6-8 cm long which open when ripe. The plant has a notable growth and can reach a height of 20-30 m.
Pedoclimatic needs
It adapts to all types of soil, preferring well-drained, rocky and calcareous ones and does not adapt to heavy, clayey and humid soils. The very rustic plant resists frost well (up to -20°/-25°c) preferring an altitude between 200m and 1500m.Botanical Information
