Genus comprising 11 species of evergreen and deciduous, erect, dioecious trees and shrubs, native to arid habitats of the Mediterranean, Central Asia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico and the southern United States. They are cultivated mainly for their leaves, flowers and fruit.
Pistacia atlantica is a shrub or small evergreen dioecious tree, up to 6-8 meters tall with a compact and rounded crown. The trunk is squat and twisted with light brown bark, which cracks only in adult plants. The leaves are odd paripinnate, shiny, leathery and dark green. The plant bears fruit in autumn, producing fruit gathered in bright red bunches that are very pleasing to the eye.
Pedoclimatic needs
It adapts to all types of soil, even very dry and stony ones. It can be grown both in flat sunny and semi-shaded areas. It tolerates wind and saltiness and also grows near the sea. It is a not very rustic species that does not tolerate intense and prolonged frosts, suitable for Mediterranean gardens. The minimum temperature it can tolerate is -4°/-6°c. For the beauty of its foliage, fruits and compact shape, it is ideal for creating both free and topiary hedges. It can also be used as a single plant to be grown as a small tree. Ideal for gardens without water.
