Genus that includes 11 species of evergreen and deciduous, erect, dioecious trees and shrubs, native to the arid habitats of the Mediterranean, Central Asia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico and the southern United States. Pistacia terebinthus is a shrub or small deciduous tree up to 6-8 m tall. Leathery, dark green leaves with a resinous odor. Dioecious species with male and female individuals. The pistillate plants bear clusters of very decorative and fragrant fruits with changing colors, depending on the degree of ripeness, from white to red to purple.
