Genus of about 200 species of deciduous or evergreen trees or shrubs, erect, rounded or occasionally spreading, very common in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere and as far north as the Andes of South America and the mountains of south-eastern Asia.
Prunus cerasifera cv "pissardii" is a fast-growing deciduous tree up to 8-10 m tall with a compact, rounded crown. It has a knotty, twisted trunk with dark, fissured bark in adult specimens. The lanceolate leaves with serrated edges are a magnificent purple color. In early spring, before the leaves appear, it produces numerous pink flowers, followed by fruits with red skin that are edible and identical in shape and flavor to plums.
Pedoclimatic requirements
It prefers deep, well-drained and rich soils but it is still a very undemanding and adaptable plant. Rustic species tolerates frosts up to -10°/-12°C. Being very early in flowering it fears spring frosts. Widely used as an ornamental species for its beautiful shape and colorful foliage.
